Law and regulation

Are the radio modules of foreign robots permitted in Germany?

Not automatically. Radio modules must comply with the Radio Equipment Directive and may only be operated on frequencies allocated in Europe, at a permissible transmit power.

This is a real point to check with imported devices: mobile network bands and mesh radio systems differ considerably between the regions of the world. A module that is approved in its country of origin may, in Germany, operate on a band that is allocated differently.

Ask for test reports according to the relevant European standards and for a statement of the frequency ranges used. Note: the Radio Equipment Directive also covers pure receivers – a satellite navigation module falls within it, even if it transmits nothing.

The complete checklist is in guide to CE conformity.
