What is the difference between remotely operated and automated?
A remotely operated system is operated by a person throughout; an automated system follows a previously taught route on its own.
In between lie several levels: assisted driving with obstacle avoidance, partially self-directed sections, and fully automated inspection rounds with automatic return to the charging station.
The economic difference is considerable. A remotely operated system ties up one person for the entire task – staff effort hardly falls. Only automated inspection rounds deliver the actual benefit.
The four levels are described in detail in the guide for operators.
